Göreme is a town of 2,000 people, settled among fairy chimneys. Pre-Christian burial chambers can be seen in the rocks in the region. At the Göreme Open Air Museum, you'll see numerous churches, both large and small, as well as monks' refectories, burial chambers, cellars, and crypts. In the monasteries within the museum, you can observe church architecture from the 7th to the 12th centuries. The frescoes of the churches, built on a flat-base barrel vault, single or triple apse, and central cross plan, reflect local styles. The town of Göreme, 10 km from Nevşehir, is located in the valley-surrounded region within the Nevşehir-Ürgüp-Avanos triangle.
